Applications of UPS

The UPS and inverters have become the lifeline of all electronic gadgets, regardless of the applications they are intended for. With the revolution in science, technology and sophistication in the field of electronics, there is no doubt that gadgets have added to our comfort and convenience, but they have also become so sensitive to the quality of power that a single cycle of poor-quality power can be disastrous to the life of the equipment and can damage it beyond repair. What is UPS?

UPS stands for uninterrupted power supply and generally provides continuous power supply to the connected load or gadgets to enable them to run continuously without any malfunction or disturbance, at their full efficiency. These inverters are intended to immediately replace the power supply in case of a power failure or voltage drop beyond the dangerous level, to prevent the connected load from being damaged. These inverters also provide protection against surges, spikes or other faults that occur in the bus supplying the load, depending on the type of inverter.

What are the types of inverters?

There are two types of inverters

  1. Off-line UPS

Off-line UPSs are those that supply power directly through the inverter and bypass the inverter at the output. In the event of a power failure, the bypass switch connects the inverter to the output and the connected load is powered by a battery via an inverter, which charges during the power supply and powers the load in the event of a power failure or power drop beyond acceptable load limits.

  1. Online UPS

In the online UPS, the batteries always remain in the system, and even the power transfer switch can be eliminated. During a power failure, the rectifier is removed from the system and the batteries continue to provide steady power to the load.

When power is restored, the rectifier is back in the system to charge the batteries and power the load. The in-line UPS allows for complete isolation of incoming power and sensitive loads.

Online UPS are mainly of two different types

1) Online interactive UPS

2) Double conversion online UPS.

Online UPS must be installed in all systems where the following applications are required.

4. Pure sine wave is essential
5. Switching time from power supply to UPS

What are the applications of inline UPS?

UPS is mainly used in areas/sectors that require an uninterrupted power supply. The uninterruptible power supply system has two main functions: to filter out disturbances in the power supply network and, in the event of a network failure, to supply power to consumers;

The highest level of protection is the main criterion, regardless of the cost of the UPS, to protect data centers, server rooms, network operations centers, other network cabinets, process industries, medical centers, diagnostic monitors, and other mission-critical equipment. Although the UPS systems are expensive, they are essential for sensitive equipment.
