How to Find the Best Suitable Industrial UPS for Your Business?

Demands for processing power continues to extend across all businesses from small to large networks. With mission critical activity so heavily reliant on ‘always on’ systems, Uninterruptible Power Supplies, or UPS, plays an ever more important and significant role to keep your business up and running but there are certain things you should consider before choosing a UPS for your business.

Technical Factors

We would have to look for factors such as input and output phase, voltage and frequency, load power rating, power factor and battery type and environmental characteristics, including humidity level, vibration, temperature, chemical and saline ambiance.

Choice of Battery

Another factor we need to look at is the choice of battery. Lithium-ion battery may be a popular choice as it has many benefits such as they are much long-lasting than traditional valve-regulated lead acid (VRLA) batteries. These batteries are lighter and heat resistant as compared to VRLA batteries without a degradation of performance.

Size of the UPS

It should be large enough to support your IT equipment. Look at the power capacity as an indicator. The higher the power capacity, the more equipment it can support. Calculate the capacity load, which is the combined amount of power you need for all your equipment to run efficiently. You can calculate this by making a list of all the equipment you want to run and total up the number of watts needed.

Failover Time

Failover time is the time a UPS needs to start after the power outage. The ideal amount of time is 5ms to 12ms. It may go up to 25ms. Line-interactive UPS takes 3ms to 8ms and High efficiency double conversion takes 1ms to 3ms. You need to ask the questions:

  • “How much time do you need after a power outage?”
  • “Do you need to remain operational consistently because you have critical machines like in hospitals?”

When looking at the length of the times the batteries in the UPS can in power outages, keep in mind the larger the wattage load, the shorter the runtime will be.

Number and Placement

  • “Do you need several UPS?”
  • “Where will be they kept? Inside or outside?”

Typically, we suggest that you should keep minimum number of UPS at an individual location.

Hybrid Solution

You can pick more than one types of UPS. When making a list of your equipment to work out the size of UPS needed, start categorizing them as whether they are business critical and how long you need them operational for. That will give you an idea if you can have a selection of UPS options in place.
